Where did Trü Pickles come from? In the 1900s, many immigrants from all parts of the world came to the United States and brought family recipes to use in the New Country. Greg Skufca’s great grandmothers were no different. One brought with her the recipe for bootleg liquor and built a still in her kitchen (that’s another story). The other great grandmother brought all her canning knowledge with her. Most recipes were not written down and were passed on to the next generation by hands on example …. From Greg’s grandmother, to his father and ultimately to himself. Greg would grow all his own produce and can what he could for his friends and family and there was one item that always stood out … the pickles. So Greg decided to share his pickles with the world! Fresh packed with no artificial ingredients, these pickles are crisp and delicious!

Trü Bread & Butter Pickles

Years ago, in Old Europe and in this country, sugar was very scarce. For this reason, Bread & Butter pickles were a delicacy and saved for very special occasions. They were considered a great treat! But have you ever noticed that other Bread & Butter pickles have a very yellow tinted juice? That’s because sugar turns a cucumber a bluish gray color (known as sugar shock), so other companies add yellow coloring, or turmeric and polysorbate to their pickles – yellow and blue makes green! Great Grandma Skufca did not have additives – and she did not need them! She knew that adding a grape leaf to the jar kept the natural green color of the pickles, even with the added sugar – no need to dye them green again! It keeps them crisp and crunchy too! That’s why you will find our Bread & Butters to be clear, crisp and delicious, unlike any other Bread & Butter pickle on the market!

Years ago, the Skufca family would fire up the smokehouse to cure all their fresh meats. One day, Grandpa Skufca accidentally left some of the fresh cucumbers inside the smokehouse. Grandma Skufca had a good laugh and decided to go ahead and pickle those too, just for fun. Using Grandpa’s smoked cucumbers and her own delicious pickle recipe, she created the first smoked pickles! The amusing story of the smoked pickles was passed down over the generations, down to Greg. He enjoyed the story so much that he has worked hard to recreate that delicious mistake – and finally succeeded! The result is the Trü Smoked Black Pepper pickle – a pickle with a Trüly original outdoor-smoked flavor that cannot be found in any other pickle on the market. Slice them onto a sandwich or burger, chop them into tuna salad, potato salad, ground them into meatloaf … they give your foods a smoky dill flavor you will love! Trü Spiced Chai

Back in the day, Great Grandma Skufca took an exotic trip to India
where she discovered the beautiful taste of chai tea and decided to
blend that taste into her amazing pickle recipe. Okay, okay, that’s not exactly how it went down. Grandma never made it to India. Chai is, however, a delicious combination of cinnamon, ginger, cloves, and other spices that was traditionally brewed and used
to treat colds, flu, digestive issues and other health problems. But what intrigued us is that it is known as “grandmother’s chai”, as the grandmother was the traditional caretaker of the family in India and would brew these spices for her family. Then guess what? The recipes would be handed down through the generations for hundreds of years. Sound familiar? So we at Tru thought it would be an interesting idea to
pay homage to the Indian grandma by using chai spices in an offshoot
of Great Grandma Skufca’s Bread & Butter pickles. The result is our out-of-this-world delicious Chai Pickle – still using the Old World natural process that Tru Pickles has become known for, these pickles use only natural ingredients, no preservatives or
additives, are always crisp and tasty. Grandmas all over the world sure do know best!
